Qualcomm Signs Landmark Infrastructure Deal with SpaceX for Starlink Mobile
Qualcomm, the world-renowned chipmaker, has signed a major multi-year infrastructure agreement with US space technology giant SpaceX for its 'Starlink Mobile' project.
Qualcomm will supply radio equipment, baseband units and integrated software to help turn SpaceX's ambitious plan to build a powerful nationwide terrestrial 5G network into reality. The company is led by Elon Musk.
Largest 5G Contract in Qualcomm's History
Qualcomm has officially announced that installation of the advanced 5G equipment will begin in 2027 at thousands of macro cell sites across various regions of the United States.
Although the specific financial value of the agreement has not been disclosed, Qualcomm has described it as the largest 5G supply contract in the history of its network infrastructure business.
By expanding beyond chipset manufacturing and consolidating its presence in the highly sought-after 5G telecommunications infrastructure market, Qualcomm is now mounting a direct challenge to established global industry leaders such as Marvell, Broadcom and Intel.
A New Equation in the Telecom Market and Technological Advantages
By combining its extensive satellite connectivity in space with an advanced terrestrial network, SpaceX aims to compete directly with established US wireless giants such as AT&T, Verizon and T-Mobile.
Although building such an extensive network will require massive investment, SpaceX is already moving quickly to acquire the necessary frequency spectrum and finalise agreements with platforms that lease telecommunications towers.
Using the advanced beamforming system of Qualcomm's Dragonwing platform, SpaceX will seek to maximise the use of its licensed spectrum. This is expected to provide users with expanded coverage, greater capacity and uninterrupted high-speed data services.
