Android-to-iPhone Photo Sharing Gets Easier with RCS

The days of blurry photos and videos when sharing them between phones running different operating systems are now largely a thing of the past. Until recently, sending a photo or video from an Android phone to an iPhone would significantly reduce its quality. The problem was mainly caused by differences between Apple’s SMS messaging system and Android’s RCS technology.

However, the integration of RCS support into Apple’s iOS 18 update has largely resolved the issue. It is now possible to send high-quality photos and videos from Android devices to iPhones without any compression.

Using RCS Technology and Settings

To preserve the original quality when sending photos, the correct settings must be enabled on both devices. iPhone users need to enable the “RCS Messaging” option from the Messages settings. On the other hand, Android users can tap the “HD” button in the messaging field while sending a photo through the Google Messages app and select “HD Plus or Original Quality.” This allows the photo to reach the iPhone at its original resolution without distortion.

Alternative Ways to Send Large Files and Videos

RCS messaging has a maximum file-sharing limit of 100 megabytes for standard file transfers. Therefore, users need to rely on alternative methods when they want to send larger videos or high-resolution photos. In such cases, apps such as Google Photos or Google Drive can be used to share files of virtually any size without compromising their original quality.

In addition, files can be sent to an iPhone using Android’s Quick Share technology. Recent Android phones, such as the Google Pixel 8a and Samsung Galaxy S series, can use Quick Share to send files directly to an iPhone through an AirDrop connection.

For phones that do not support this direct connection feature, users can use Quick Share’s QR code option. By scanning the code with an iPhone, large files can be transferred quickly and easily.
