Following Walton, Smart Hi-Tech Industries Limited, the manufacturer of Honor brand smartphones in Bangladesh, has launched a new Surface-Mount Technology (SMT) line aimed at manufacturing smartphone motherboards locally. Electronic components will be directly mounted onto smartphone motherboards using specialized machinery through the SMT line, the company's PR agency stated in a press release on Wednesday, November 4, 2026.
Bokul Roy, Media Relations Manager of the organization, stated that this technology will shift a critical stage of smartphone production to Bangladesh, reducing reliance on imported components and kits.
According to information provided by him, a four-member Executive MBA delegation from Nanyang Business School in Singapore has already reviewed the new production line, the company's overall operational activities, and the local smartphone market at Smart Hi-Tech's factory in Kaliakair, Gazipur. The delegation visited the plant to observe the transition from assembly to full-fledged manufacturing and to examine how local production can accelerate Bangladesh's goal of exporting smartphones.
The visit is part of 'Project SmartAscend', a 9-month initiative under Nanyang Technological University's 'SPAN Capstone Programme', running through April 2027. The project addresses existing challenges and opportunities in expanding local smartphone manufacturing and building export markets. During the visit, the delegation met with Mohammad Zahirul Islam, Managing Director of Smart Hi-Tech Group, and toured the company's sales outlets, retail markets, and partner shops.
Mohammad Zahirul Islam, Managing Director of Smart Hi-Tech Group, stated that the visit provides delegation members with first-hand insight into the company's manufacturing processes and market dynamics. He noted that the commitment to produce world-class electronics in Bangladesh was made when the factory was launched, and the new SMT line pushes that vision forward. Rather than merely assembling phones, full-fledged smartphones are being produced locally, with the next goal being to export 'Made in Bangladesh' smartphones to South Asia, the Middle East, Africa, and beyond.
Glenn Lim, who led the Nanyang team, stated that the factory visit and market observations will help students understand the industry through practical experience, expressing gratitude to the Smart Hi-Tech management for opening their doors.
Smart Hi-Tech set up the factory in Kaliakair in December 2025 with an investment of Tk 1,500 crore. The first Honor smartphone produced at this plant under the 'Made in Bangladesh' label was the 'Honor X6c'.
