Malaysian customs authorities have seized state-of-the-art artificial intelligence (AI) chips worth approximately 49.5 million ringgit, or $12.11 million, during a raid on the free trade zone at Kuala Lumpur International Airport.

During the surprise inspection on October 15, authorities recovered 30 advanced server units in which the high-performance AI chips had been cleverly concealed. Aspalila Ag Tuah, the airport's customs director, officially confirmed the seizure at a press conference.

Deceptive Tactics and Smuggling Network

Preliminary investigations have revealed that the shipment originated from another Asian country and that Malaysia was being used as a transit route for re-exporting the goods to a third country without the necessary trade permits.

Customs officials said false information had been provided in the shipment's documentation, with the goods declared as ordinary “electronic components” to evade international export restrictions and tighter controls. A local company suspected of involvement in the smuggling operation has been summoned for questioning.

Customs authorities believe the shipment may be linked to an international smuggling network whose operation was foiled in June. The same network had previously been implicated in an attempted smuggling operation involving chips worth approximately 100 million ringgit.

US Geopolitics and Tightened Surveillance

Amid mounting geopolitical pressure from Washington to halt the supply of advanced technology and AI semiconductors from the United States to China, Malaysia imposed strict controls on the export and transit of US-origin AI chips last year.

Following this attempt to circumvent global restrictions by using Malaysia's main airport as a transit channel, intelligence monitoring and enforcement measures across Southeast Asia have been further tightened to protect the international semiconductor supply chain and safeguard advanced chips.
