SpaceX Finalises $40 Billion Financing Deal with Apollo Affiliate for AI Chips and Servers
SpaceX, a leading company in the space and artificial intelligence (AI) sectors, has finalised a massive financing agreement worth approximately $40 billion with an affiliate of investment firm Apollo Global Management. According to regulatory filings, under the agreement, Apollo will directly purchase AI chips, or graphics processing units (GPUs), along with the necessary server hardware, and subsequently lease the equipment to SpaceX. Each lease will run for slightly more than five years from the date the hardware is delivered.
Financing Strategy and Timeline
SpaceX CEO Elon Musk announced on social media platform X that the company had completed $40 billion in debt financing for graphics processing units.
A substantial portion of the new financing will be used for chips scheduled to arrive in the first and second quarters of 2027, meaning it will have little impact on the company's financial position in the current quarter. The agreement is targeted for formal completion by the end of this year, with lease terms expected to begin as the chips arrive in the first half of 2027.
AI Capabilities and Future Space Missions
SpaceX Chief Financial Officer Brett Johnsen previously stated that the company's capital expenditure in the fourth quarter would be approximately $35 billion to $40 billion. The primary objective of this substantial investment is to enhance the company's AI capabilities by acquiring high-performance processors from NVIDIA and the supporting server infrastructure.
Powerful AI processing capabilities will not only help streamline SpaceX's space operations but also support the financing and development of ambitious long-term projects, including missions to the Moon and Mars.
