Microsoft Announces Voluntary Exit Programme Targeting Around 60,000 Employees
Technology giant Microsoft has announced a voluntary exit offer (VEO) targeting approximately 27 per cent of its global workforce, or around 60,000 employees.
The decision was confirmed through an internal message sent by Chief People Officer Amy Coleman and an official blog post. Under the time-limited programme, eligible employees will receive a one-time financial package, along with guidance on career planning and support for their transition to new opportunities.
Eligible Countries and Specific Departments
Microsoft has stated that the buyout offer will apply to employees at Level 70 and below in selected teams across four countries: Canada, India, the United Kingdom and the United States. The eligible ranks also include general managers and some vice presidents.
According to internal sources, employees in AI Experiences, Copilot, Finance, Human Resources (HR), Xbox, and Windows and Devices will be eligible for the financial package. However, the Marketing, Commercial Business and Security units have been excluded from the voluntary departure programme.
Strategic Context and AI-Driven Restructuring
The move comes as Microsoft is investing a massive $175 billion in building AI infrastructure. The company is taking this major step to reduce operating costs and restructure its workforce to meet evolving business needs.
The new buyout programme has been designed using lessons from similar initiatives implemented previously. It is intended to give employees an opportunity to pursue new career paths while helping Microsoft align its business and administrative workforce with the demands of rapidly evolving AI technology.
