AI-Driven DPI Framework Unveiled at UN Event

Integrating AI-driven Digital Public Infrastructure (DPI), biometric verification, and secure cross-border data interoperability, a single digital identity will become the primary portal for citizens to access government services in Bangladesh, stated Rehan Asad, Advisor to the Prime Minister on Telecommunications and ICT. He made the announcement during a high-level UN side event in New York on Tuesday (22 September).
Organized jointly on Tuesday by the Office of the UN Secretary-General’s Envoy on Technology and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the event brought together ministers and senior officials worldwide to discuss DPI governance. Bangladesh served as the sole representative from the Asia-Pacific region on the panel.
Advisor Rehan Asad confirmed that Bangladesh has commenced building the framework, aiming for a rollout within the next 18 to 24 months. He stated, "We want to implement the world’s best and most secure DPI and Digital ID. We have embarked on this journey. It will take time—there are no shortcuts—but we are laying the foundation for our future."
He highlighted that Bangladesh is adapting Estonia's 'X-Road' data exchange architecture to ensure secure inter-agency government data sharing. The session also examined cross-border digital identity models from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, Rwanda, and the European Union's Digital Identity Wallet, focusing on how AI can optimize DPI platforms.
Emphasizing global collaboration, Asad added, "The core point is that this is not just about Bangladesh or the Asia-Pacific. In the future, DPI and Digital ID will become the centerpiece of government service delivery worldwide."
