Luna Ultra Launch Insta360 Challenges DJI
Insta360 has entered the handheld gimbal camera market with its first-ever gimbal camera, the Luna Ultra, challenging the long-standing dominance of DJI in the segment. Equipped with 3x optical zoom, a 1-inch sensor, and 8K video recording capabilities, the device is emerging as a strong rival to DJI’s popular Osmo Pocket series. Gadget review platform Engadget awarded the camera a rating of 8.7 out of 10.
The Luna Ultra features a dual-camera setup. Its primary camera is equipped with a large 1-inch sensor, an f/1.8 aperture, and a 20mm lens. The secondary unit is a telephoto camera featuring a 1/1.3-inch sensor, an f/2.0 aperture, and a 60mm lens. This combination enables 3x true optical zoom, 6x lossless zoom, and up to 12x digital zoom.
For video recording, the camera supports 8K resolution at 30 frames per second and 4K recording at 120 frames per second. It includes Dolby Vision and I-Log color modes, while its standard recording mode also supports 10-bit color. Similar to the DJI Osmo Pocket lineup, however, vertical or portrait video recording remains limited to 3K resolution. For photography, the device offers a standard 9-megapixel mode alongside a 37-megapixel “UltraPhoto” mode.
The most distinctive feature of the Luna Ultra is its detachable 2-inch touchscreen display. The display can be completely removed from the camera body and functions as a wireless remote controller. Users can control pan, tilt, zoom, and menu functions from a distance of up to 60 feet. Adding to its appeal, the detachable display includes a built-in microphone, allowing vloggers to record high-quality audio even when the camera is positioned far away, eliminating the need for an external microphone.
The device comes with 47GB of internal storage, which can be expanded through a microSD card. Its 1,550mAh battery delivers approximately four hours of continuous recording. The camera also incorporates Leica-inspired color filters and a range of traditional shooting modes, including PureVideo, Time-Lapse, and Barrel Roll.
Among its key strengths are the 3x optical zoom, innovative detachable wireless display, impressive image quality, and support for Dolby Vision and 10-bit color. On the downside, the internal storage may feel limited for 8K recording, the device is slightly bulkier than the DJI Osmo Pocket and therefore less pocket-friendly, and its premium pricing may deter some buyers.
Considering its feature set, the Luna Ultra’s main competitor is expected to be DJI’s upcoming Osmo Pocket 4P. However, Insta360 could gain an advantage in the United States market, where DJI faces challenges related to official product imports.
The Luna Ultra starts at US$770. While the price is relatively high for a portable vlogging camera, its optical zoom capabilities and innovative wireless display system are expected to attract vloggers and content creators seeking premium features.
