Dhaka: To cultivate creativity and scientific thinking among primary students, the government is incorporating 'Science Toys' and hands-on learning tools into the primary curriculum. State Minister for Primary and Mass Education Bobby Hajjaj announced the initiative on Sunday (August 9) while attending as chief guest at the 'Foundational Learning Action Tracker (FLAT)' event organized by UNICEF Bangladesh at Hotel Sheraton in Banani, Dhaka.
The State Minister stated that the objective is to allow children to learn science interactively through play rather than relying solely on textbooks. Additionally, 'Math Labs' will be introduced across primary schools to help students visually grasp fundamental concepts like shapes, addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. He emphasized overcoming gaps in foundational learning, noting that weaknesses in basic literacy and numeracy severely impact future academic years.
Boby Hajjaj stated, "We want children to learn science not just by reading books, but by hands-on activities and through play. With this goal in mind, there are plans to incorporate science toys into the primary curriculum."
"Greater emphasis is being placed on science, mathematics, design, and creativity in primary education. To make children's learning process joyful and practical, 'science toys' and various hands-on learning materials will be integrated into the curriculum. Additionally, initiatives are being taken to establish 'Math Labs' in primary schools, where students will learn fundamental mathematical concepts like shape, size, multiplication, division, addition, and subtraction through various materials," the Minister of State added.
Addressing out-of-school children, the Minister announced that a national free school uniform distribution program will officially launch on August 16 to boost student retention. Regarding the Mid-Day Meal program, he noted that identified pilot limitations are being systematically resolved. He stressed that primary education projects must transition from philosophy-centric ideas to strong, operational frameworks featuring strict monitoring and evaluation.
The event was attended by Jasmine Nahar, Secretary of Primary and Mass Education, Rana Flowers, UNICEF Bangladesh Representative, Shahina Ferdousi, Director General of the Directorate of Primary Education, and senior officials from various government and non-government organizations.
