Google DeepMind has reportedly disbanded the core team behind AlphaFold, the groundbreaking artificial intelligence project that earned the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry. According to a report by the Financial Times, the decision comes as the company redirects its priorities and research budget toward its large language model, Gemini.

As part of the restructuring, AlphaFold's remaining researchers have been reassigned to other divisions within DeepMind, while several members of the original team have already left the company.

    A Landmark Achievement in Science

Google DeepMind launched the AlphaFold project in 2018 to address one of biology's most enduring challenges—predicting the three-dimensional structures of proteins.

For nearly half a century, scientists struggled to determine how amino acid chains fold into complex protein structures. Traditional methods, such as X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), often required years to identify the structure of a single protein.

Using artificial intelligence, AlphaFold transformed the field by predicting protein structures with remarkable accuracy in just minutes.

The project later made structural predictions for the entire human proteome and nearly 200 million proteins freely available to researchers worldwide. The technology significantly accelerated research into drug discovery, vaccine development, and the study of neurological diseases such as Alzheimer's and Parkinson's.

In recognition of this landmark achievement, DeepMind Chief Executive Officer Demis Hassabis and senior researcher John Jumper were awarded the 2024 Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

    Why the Team Was Disbanded

Despite the project's historic success, Google has decided to wind down the original AlphaFold research team less than two years after the Nobel Prize announcement.

Last month, AlphaFold's lead scientist, John Jumper, left Google DeepMind to join rival AI company Anthropic. Several experienced researchers reportedly departed alongside him.

The remaining members of the AlphaFold team have been reassigned to Gemini-related projects, enzyme design research, or Isomorphic Labs, DeepMind's drug discovery subsidiary.

Explaining the strategic shift, Pushmeet Kohli, Vice President of Research at Google DeepMind, said the company's focus over the past nine years had been to solve specific scientific problems. However, changing technological priorities have prompted a broader strategy.

Rather than concentrating on individual scientific challenges, Google now aims to dedicate its resources to developing increasingly capable, general-purpose Gemini AI models that can help automate the entire scientific research process.
