Users Gain Control Over Social Media Algorithms
For years, social media platforms determined what users saw through their own artificial intelligence-driven recommendation systems. While users could express preferences through likes, follows, and interactions, ultimate control remained with platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and TikTok. That is now beginning to change as major technology companies hand greater control of content recommendations directly to users.
Powered by advances in artificial intelligence, users can now actively train and customize their own recommendation algorithms. As a result, social media feeds are becoming increasingly personalized, resembling streaming platforms where individuals can tailor content according to their interests and preferences.
Threads
Threads, owned by Meta Platforms, has recently introduced a privacy-focused feature called “Your Algo.” Through this tool, users can privately instruct the platform about the types of content they wish to see more or less of.
For example, a user can request, “Show me more football-related posts and fewer political posts for the next three days.” Such preferences can be applied for one, three, or seven days.
Instagram has added a new settings feature called “Your Algorithm.” This tool allows users to review the topics Instagram believes they are interested in and modify those interests by removing unwanted categories or adding new ones.
According to Instagram chief Adam Mosseri, advances in large language models and AI technologies have made it easier to explain how recommendation systems work and incorporate user feedback into content personalization.
TikTok
TikTok offers a feature called “Manage Topics,” allowing users to adjust their interest levels across categories such as sports, travel, cooking, and entertainment using sliders.
The platform has also introduced “Smart Keyword Filters.” For instance, if a user chooses to avoid home renovation content, the AI system can automatically block related terms and topics, including broader categories associated with renovation projects.
A Shift Toward Personalized Feeds
Technology analysts believe these user-control features benefit both consumers and platforms. Users receive more relevant content aligned with their interests, while social media companies benefit from increased engagement and longer time spent on their platforms.
As AI technologies become more sophisticated, experts expect user-controlled recommendation systems to become a standard feature across major social networking services, giving individuals unprecedented influence over the content they consume online.
