Six Young Mathematicians to Represent Bangladesh at IMO 2026 in China

A six-member Bangladesh team will leave for China on Wednesday (June 24) to participate in the 67th International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), the world's most prestigious mathematics competition. Carrying the message, “No pressure, just enjoy mathematics,” the young mathematicians will represent Bangladesh at the global event.

This marks Bangladesh’s 22nd participation in the International Mathematical Olympiad.

At a press conference held in the capital on Monday, Professor Mohammad Kaykobad, President of the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee and Distinguished Professor of Computer Science and Engineering at BRAC University, formally introduced the team members.

Organizers said the team will first travel to Beijing to take part in the Fourth International Mathematics Summer Camp 2026 before heading to Shanghai for the main competition. The IMO will begin on July 13 and conclude on July 20. Around 600 contestants from more than 100 countries, including Bangladesh, are expected to participate.

In his written statement, Professor Mohammad Kaykobad said Bangladesh has won 1 gold, 7 silver, 40 bronze medals and 47 honorable mentions since it first participated in the IMO in 2005. He noted that these achievements reflect the growing interest and capability of Bangladeshi students in mathematics.

He also highlighted that the National Mathematics Festival, organized by the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee with sponsorship from Dutch-Bangla Bank and management support from Prothom Alo, has become one of the country’s largest educational events over the past two decades.

Md. Sirajul Islam, Deputy Managing Director of Dutch-Bangla Bank PLC, said the entire nation would be watching the performance of the students representing Bangladesh on the international stage. He added that the bank would continue supporting initiatives aimed at nurturing young talent.

Prothom Alo Managing Editor Anisul Hoque said the newspaper is committed to promoting stories of young achievers and encouraged the participants to bring more success for Bangladesh.

Munir Hasan, General Secretary of the Bangladesh Mathematical Olympiad Committee, said participation in international summer camps would help students strengthen their preparation before the global competition. He also expressed concern over the declining participation of female students in mathematics olympiads.

Professor B M Mainul Hossain, Treasurer of the committee and Director of the Institute of Information Technology at the University of Dhaka, advised students to remain focused and serious without feeling overwhelmed by the responsibility of representing the country.

The six-member team consists of Monami Zaman of Viqarunnisa Noon School and College, Jawad Hamim Chowdhury of Dhaka Imperial College, M Jamiul Hossain of Rajuk Uttara Model College, Md. Raihan Siddiqui of Chattogram College, Mohammad Marzuk Rahman of Chattogram Cantonment English School and College, and Tahsin Khan of Ananda Mohan College.

Coach Mahbubul Alam Majumdar will serve as team leader, while Academic Coordinator Apurba Kumar will serve as deputy team leader. Coordinator Md. Bayezid Bhuiyan will accompany the team as observer.

According to the organizers, a total of 51,532 students from more than 19,000 educational institutions registered online for this year's competition cycle. Following multiple selection rounds, including online qualifiers, regional mathematics festivals, the national festival and the national mathematics camp, the final six-member team was selected.

The press conference was also attended by Professor Abdul Hakim Khan of BUET, Associate Professor Rizwana Riaz, former teacher trainer Raziya Begum, Talikhata Chief Executive Shahadat Ullah Khan and Professor Hasan Uz Zaman of BRAC University, among others.
