Meta has announced a major expansion of features for its video-editing application, Edits, as the company seeks to strengthen its position in the increasingly competitive creator economy. The new additions include an artificial intelligence-powered assistant and a dedicated desktop version of the app, both designed to enhance content creation and editing workflows.

The company unveiled a preview of the upcoming features during a special event held in Los Angeles on Wednesday.

Meta launched Edits last year as a direct competitor to ByteDance’s popular video-editing app CapCut. The latest upgrades are expected to intensify Meta’s rivalry with both CapCut and TikTok in the creator tools market.

One of the most significant additions is an AI assistant designed to help creators generate content ideas and optimize performance. The tool will analyze Instagram-related metrics such as views, audience retention rates and follower activity patterns. Based on these insights, it will recommend content strategies, trending topics and music selections that may improve engagement and reach.

According to Meta, the AI assistant is intended to function as a built-in brainstorming partner, reducing creators’ reliance on external AI services for content planning and idea generation.

The company believes the feature will encourage creators to publish content more frequently, ultimately increasing user engagement across Instagram. Meta recently introduced a similar AI-powered tool for Facebook creators, while comparable recommendation systems are already available on platforms such as YouTube Studio and TikTok.

In addition to AI-powered assistance, Meta has confirmed that a desktop version of Edits is currently in development. Until now, the platform has primarily operated as a mobile application.

The upcoming desktop edition will provide creators with a larger workspace and more advanced editing capabilities, making it particularly useful for complex video production tasks. Meta said users will be able to seamlessly synchronize projects between mobile and desktop devices, allowing for a more flexible editing experience.

The move positions Edits as a direct competitor to CapCut’s desktop platform and reflects Meta’s broader strategy of offering a comprehensive creator ecosystem.

Alongside these upcoming features, Meta has also released several new editing tools that are now available to all users.

Although Instagram has not disclosed the exact number of Edits users, the company claims that content produced through the app receives approximately 10 percent more saves and 2 percent more reshares than other content published on the platform.

Meta said testing of the AI assistant has already begun with creators attending the Los Angeles event, while the desktop version is expected to be released to the public in the near future. The newly introduced editing tools are available immediately.

The Edits app can be downloaded free of charge on both iOS and Android devices.
