The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has organized a special fortnightly health camp in the capital’s Mohakhali area to support the health and well-being of public transport drivers and helpers who work for long hours under intense heat and challenging conditions.

The initiative, launched by the Traffic Gulshan Division of DMP, began at 10:00 am on Saturday in front of the main entrance of Mohakhali Bus Terminal and continued until 3:00 pm. Under the program, transport workers are receiving free medical consultations, essential medicines and health guidance from a team of experienced physicians provided by Universal Medical College Hospital.

The health camp was formally inaugurated by Additional Commissioner of Police (Traffic) Md. Anisur Rahman at a ceremony held on the terminal premises. Senior officials from the DMP Traffic Division and representatives of transport owners’ and workers’ organizations were also present.

According to officials from the Traffic Gulshan Division, regular health and vision checkups for drivers and transport assistants are crucial for improving road safety and reducing traffic accidents. The initiative aims to encourage transport workers to undergo routine medical examinations while raising awareness about health-related issues.

Speaking about the response to the program, Universal Medical College Hospital Medical Assistant Saiful Islam said the camp had received significant interest from transport workers since its opening.

“More than 40 transport workers have already received free medical consultations and necessary medicines. We are also providing advice for long-term treatment where required,” he said.

He noted that many drivers and helpers suffer from occupational health problems due to the nature of their work.

“Most of the patients we examined complained of chronic pain in the lower back, arms and legs caused by prolonged sitting. We have also identified vision-related issues among many workers as a result of continuous exposure to dust, sunlight and long hours on the road,” he added.

DMP officials have encouraged all drivers and transport assistants operating on the Mohakhali routes to take advantage of the free healthcare services and eye examinations available through the camp.
