Over 4 million e-returns filed in the 2025-26 tax year
There has been significant progress in online income tax return submissions for the 2025-26 tax year. To date, over 4 million taxpayers have filed e-returns, compared to 1.399 million e-returns filed within the stipulated timeframe last year.
This information was conveyed in a press release issued by the National Board of Revenue (NBR) to the media on Wednesday, 4th March.
Previously, a special order from the Board mandated online return submissions for all categories of taxpayers, with the exception of senior taxpayers aged 65 years or older, physically disabled or specially-abled individuals, Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, legal representatives acting on behalf of deceased taxpayers, and foreign nationals working in Bangladesh.
Since 4th August 2025, approximately 5 million taxpayers have registered with the e-return system, with over 4 million having already filed their returns.
In terms of monthly filings, 251,784 e-returns were filed in August, 301,302 in September, 454,076 in October, 1,040,472 in November, 978,198 in December, 655,363 in January, 294,987 in February, and 36,700 in the first four days of March.
Of the returns filed, 2,866,618 were from male taxpayers and 1,136,003 from female taxpayers. 1,610,750 men and 478,566 women declared income from salary. Income from property rentals was declared by 187,754 men and 84,477 women.
1,435,630 men and 765,197 women declared income below the taxable threshold. 534,954 men and 193,837 women declared income between 5, to10 lac taka. 164,983 men and 47,532 women declared income between 10-20 lac taka. 54,212 men and 11,455 women declared income between 20-40,lac taka. 29,080 men and 5,117 women declared income exceeding 40 lac taka.
39,363 male and 11,065 female taxpayers paid surcharges based on their declared wealth.
While online return submission isn't mandatory for Bangladeshi taxpayers residing abroad, they can register and file e-returns by sending the required information via email. Alternatively, returns can be submitted through an authorised representative.
Taxpayers can declare income, expenses, assets, and liabilities and pay their taxes from home, without uploading any documents. Amendments to filed returns can be made within 180 days of submission. To date, over 56,000 taxpayers have submitted amended returns.
For assistance with e-returns, taxpayers can contact the Board's call centre, or seek support from the website and tax zone help desks. The National Board of Revenue has urged all taxpayers to file their returns by 31st March 2026.
