Challenging long-standing investment norms in Silicon Valley, Sequoia Capital is set to establish a new precedent in the artificial intelligence sector. According to a report by the Financial Times, the globally renowned venture capital firm is joining a major fundraising round by Anthropic, the maker of the Claude chatbot. The move has sparked widespread discussion, as Sequoia is already an investor in both OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI. TechCrunch reported the development.

In the venture capital world, it is generally customary to avoid simultaneous investments in competing companies within the same sector. Against this backdrop, Sequoia’s decision is being viewed as particularly significant. Last year, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, while testifying in court, stated that investors with access to OpenAI’s confidential information could have such access revoked if they actively invest in rival firms—describing this practice as an industry “standard safeguard.”

According to the report, the current funding round is being led by Singapore’s GIC and US-based Coatue, each committing $1.5 billion.

Anthropic aims to raise at least $25 billion, with the company’s valuation estimated at around $350 billion—more than double its valuation just four months ago. Other major investors, including Microsoft and Nvidia, have also pledged substantial funding.

Sequoia’s relationship with Sam Altman dates back many years. The firm supported him early on when he dropped out of Stanford to launch Loopt. Even during Altman’s brief departure from OpenAI, Sequoia’s new leadership publicly expressed interest in backing his future ventures.

Analysts believe Sequoia’s investment in Anthropic goes beyond a purely financial decision, signaling a broader shift in power dynamics and investment philosophy within the AI sector. There is also speculation that Anthropic may begin preparations for an IPO later this year.
