Sentinel Sojourn Sparks Scrutiny: Ukrainian YouTuber Arrested for Contact Attempt
Indian authorities have arrested a Ukrainian YouTuber for attempting to establish contact with the isolated indigenous Sentinelese tribe on North Sentinel Island in the Bay of Bengal. The report was first published by The Verge.
The individual, identified as 24-year-old Mykhailo Viktorovych Polyakov, reportedly sailed to North Sentinel Island in an inflatable boat and left offerings of Diet Coke and coconuts for the Sentinelese tribe before returning to Port Blair in the Andaman Islands, where he was subsequently detained by police.
In an official statement, Indian police said, “It is illegal to make contact with the indigenous communities in the interest of preserving their way of life and culture. The accused violated these laws by attempting to approach and interact with the protected tribe.”
The Sentinelese have long maintained a strict isolation from the outside world and are known for their hostility toward intruders. Notably, in 2018, an American missionary was killed while trying to make contact with the tribe.
Following the incident, Indian law enforcement reiterated its warning that any attempt to forcibly interact with the Sentinelese will be met with strict legal action.
