Amazon Arms Delivery Drivers with AI-Powered Smart Glasses

E-commerce giant Amazon has announced the development of artificial intelligence (AI)-powered smart glasses for its delivery workforce. With these smart glasses, delivery associates will be able to scan packages, follow delivery routes, and collect proof of delivery — all hands-free, without using their phones, reports TechCrunch.

According to Amazon, the glasses are equipped with camera and computer vision technology that will display delivery directions and nearby hazards directly within the user’s line of sight. This will enable delivery personnel to complete their tasks more quickly and safely. Once the vehicle is parked, the glasses automatically activate, identify the package, and guide the driver to the exact delivery address.

The glasses will also feature prescription lens compatibility and adaptive lenses that automatically adjust to lighting conditions. Additionally, a wearable controller will be attached to the delivery vest, containing operational controls, a replaceable battery, and an emergency button.

The technology is currently being tested on a limited scale across North America. Amazon plans to enhance the system further before rolling it out on a wider scale in the near future.
