Apple Axes ‘Clips’ as AI Video Apps Rise
Apple has announced the discontinuation of its popular video creation app Clips. The company confirmed that, starting October 10, the app will no longer be available on the App Store, and no future updates or new versions will be released, according to TechCrunch.
In a support notice on Apple’s website, the company stated that new users will no longer be able to download Clips. However, existing users can continue using the app on current or older versions of iOS and iPadOS. They can also re-download it from their Apple ID if needed.
Apple advised users to save their created videos to their photo library, noting that the app’s usability will decline over time since it will no longer receive updates.
Launched in 2017, Clips was initially seen as an alternative to Snapchat and Instagram Stories, allowing users to combine photos and videos with filters, emojis, and music.
In recent years, however, Apple released only minor bug fixes without major updates, and many users admitted they had stopped using the app long ago.
Technology analysts suggest that, with the growing popularity of AI-driven video creation tools like OpenAI’s Sora, the discontinuation of Clips was inevitable.
