Shibir Seeks State Status for ‘National Anti-Oppression Day’
Marking the sixth death anniversary of the late Abrar Fahad, a meritorious second-year student of the Department of Electrical and Electronic Engineering at Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET), Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has called for declaring October 7 as the National Anti-Oppression Day and for its official observance nationwide.
To commemorate the day, the organization announced plans to hold branch-based discussion meetings and prayer sessions. It also intends to organize anti-oppression seminars and symposiums on campuses, highlight the incidents of torture carried out by the banned Chhatra League during the fascist regime, and initiate legal actions in this regard. Additionally, students have been urged to write on various platforms against oppression and campus domination.
The announcement came through a press release issued on Sunday, October 5, by Shibir’s Central President, Zahidul Islam.
The statement reads, “On October 7, 2019, BUET’s meritorious student Abrar Fahad was brutally murdered by the terrorists of the banned Chhatra League after being branded as a member of Chhatra Shibir. His only crime was speaking the truth and voicing against domination.”
It further stated, “Since assuming power in 2009, the Chhatra League has tortured at least six thousand students in its bid to establish campus supremacy. In the post-July uprising reality, the student community never wants to witness such horrific scenes of persecution again.”
In light of these circumstances, Bangladesh Islami Chhatra Shibir has decided to observe the day as Anti-Oppression Day and called upon the government to officially declare and observe it as National Anti-Oppression Day.
Following the central directive, Shibir leaders have urged all its metropolitan, university, city, and district branches to implement the announced programs accordingly.
