Gazipur Digital University Renamed As University of Frontier Technology Amid Student Protests
Amid student objections, the interim government has decided to rename Gazipur Digital University. The institution will now be called the University of Frontier Technology, Bangladesh.
The decision was made during the first meeting of the Advisory Council held at the Secretariat on Thursday, August 7. Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus chaired the session, after which Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam briefed the media.
He also announced that two teachers and one staff member who died in the Milestone tragedy will receive special posthumous honors. “An award in the name of Meherun Chowdhury will soon be introduced by the Ministry of Education,” said the press secretary.
Sources confirmed that during the meeting, the Chief Adviser instructed each ministry to appoint a focal point to ensure the completion of 121 immediately actionable tasks by December. From July 8, 2024, to July 31, 2025, the Advisory Council has held 41 meetings and adopted 315 decisions—of which 247 have already been implemented.
Addressing various questions from journalists, the Press Secretary claimed that both law enforcement and field administration are performing better than before. “If the administration had collapsed, food reserves wouldn’t have grown from 1.8 million metric tons, which Sheikh Hasina left before fleeing, to 2.1 million metric tons now,” he stated. “We’ve cleared $4 billion in outstanding payments over the past year and brought inflation under control. We've also faced six floods and achieved success in tariff negotiations with the UK. These weren’t possible with a weak bureaucracy.”
Responding to a separate question, he added, “The interim government hasn’t acted as fascists or political allies, but rather taken action against civil servants who violated service rules.”
He noted that the government is working to improve the country’s law and order situation to allow for elections by February, ahead of Ramadan. “To ensure a fair election, the number of law enforcement personnel will increase—from 800,000 currently, an additional 50,000 will be deployed. Army personnel will also be increased from 60,000,” he said. He further clarified that the election date will be set by the Election Commission, and that until legal proceedings are complete, political activities of the Awami League will remain suspended.
