The High Court has declared the case filed against renowned photographer Shahidul Alam under the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) Act to be unlawful, effectively dismissing the charges against him, according to his legal representatives.

The verdict was delivered on Thursday, August 7.

Previously, on November 4, 2024, the High Court had issued a stay on the investigation process and also asked the state to explain why the case should not be quashed. The petition to cancel the case was filed by Shahidul Alam himself.

Legal sources noted that the case was filed against Alam in August 2018 under Section 57 of the ICT Act, following allegations of spreading false information online during the student-led road safety protests. The Digital Security Act, which replaced the ICT Act, came into effect later in October 2018.

The High Court’s ruling on August 7, 2025, formally brings the long-standing case to a close.
