Bangladesh Bank Warns of Fake 'TakaPay' Website Exploiting Public Data
Bangladesh Bank has issued a public warning regarding a fraudulent website operating under the name of the national card scheme ‘TakaPay’. The fake site is reportedly attempting to collect personal and sensitive information from the public, posing a serious threat of fraud and financial loss.
In a press release issued on Monday, August 4, the central bank stated, “A fake website named https://takapaycard.com is collecting critical personal data such as name, address, mobile number, email, and even National ID numbers from the public. This website has no affiliation with Bangladesh Bank or the TakaPay card scheme.”
According to Bangladesh Bank, the website was created without any authorization and unlawfully uses official logos and trademarks associated with the government, including those of TakaPay and NPSB (National Payment Switch Bangladesh). The central bank clarified that it has not launched any official website or app for TakaPay yet.
The TakaPay card was introduced by Bangladesh Bank to ensure a secure, transparent domestic card transaction system and to reduce dependence on foreign currency. Currently, 15 scheduled banks are offering the TakaPay card to their customers.
Bangladesh Bank further noted that the unauthorized use of TakaPay and NPSB logos and trademarks is a direct violation of the Trademark Act, 2009. Under this law, no individual or institution is permitted to use registered trademarks without approval.
In addition, the recently enacted Payment and Settlement Systems Act, 2024 stipulates that no person, organization, or company may offer payment-related services or conduct transactions without approval from the central bank. Activities such as investment solicitation, loan disbursement, or fund storage via any online or offline platform without authorization are considered punishable offenses under this law.
Urging the public to stay vigilant, Bangladesh Bank emphasized: “Individuals must refrain from submitting any information on this fake website. Falling into such traps may lead to financial fraud and harassment.”
