At least ten provinces and cities in China are offering cash subsidies ranging from 2,000 to 5,000 yuan (approximately $280 to $700) for buyers of electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles powered by Huawei software. The incentive applies specifically to vehicles equipped with Huawei’s HarmonyOS operating system and its autonomous driving technologies, according to a report by Wired.

While China had provided nationwide subsidies for electric vehicles since 2009, these were officially discontinued in 2023. That makes this company-specific subsidy initiative for Huawei particularly surprising to industry analysts.

Chinese automotive industry analyst Tu Li commented, “Local governments sometimes create policies to support their regional automakers, such as prioritizing them in taxi fleets. But it's rare to see direct cash subsidies focused solely on one company.”

This move is expected to significantly accelerate the adoption of Huawei’s automotive software at a national scale, potentially positioning the company as a dominant player in China’s growing smart vehicle ecosystem.
