OTT platforms remain at the epicenter of modern entertainment, with a slew of new content premiering each week across languages and genres. Last week, several titles including Kanagoli, Heads of State, Kalidhar Lapata, Thug Life, and Uppu Kapurambu debuted on various local and international platforms, offering a mix of suspense, action, drama, and humor.

Among them, Kanagoli, a Bangla-language web series, premiered on July 3 on the OTT platform Bongo. Starring Shyamal Mawla, Aisha Khan, and Kazi Nowshaba Ahmed, the six-episode psychological thriller was directed by Ahmed Jihad.

The gripping series follows a disturbing sequence of murders, all committed using a single weapon — a pair of scissors. As women across the city fall victim, panic spreads. With no leads, the police turn to the sharp-witted Officer Mahfuz. As he delves deeper, Mahfuz realizes he is entangled in a chilling game of minds.

On the same day, Netflix released Thug Life, a Tamil gangster action drama starring Kamal Haasan, Silambarasan TR, and Trisha Krishnan. Directed by Mani Ratnam with a screenplay by Kamal Haasan himself, the film traces the rise and betrayal within a crime syndicate in 1994 Delhi. The plot follows the fearsome mafia don Ranga Raya Shaktivel, who raises a boy named Amaran like a brother. Years later, suspecting betrayal, Shaktivel finds himself locked in a deadly confrontation with the very person he nurtured.

On July 4, ZEE5 released the Hindi drama Kalidhar Lapata, while Telugu film Uppu Kapurambu became available on Prime Video. Uppu Kapurambu, starring Keerthy Suresh and Suhas, is set in the 1990s and offers a humorous take on rural challenges. A young woman appointed as the village chief is confronted by a bizarre issue — the village cemetery has run out of space.

In Kalidhar Lapata, Abhishek Bachchan, Daivik, and Zeeshan Ayyub portray a heartfelt tale of abandonment and rediscovery. The story centers around Kalidhar, a middle-aged man whose family secretly plans to abandon him. Upon overhearing this, he flees and befriends a street child, ultimately uncovering the true meaning of life.

Earlier, on July 2, Heads of State premiered on Prime Video, starring John Cena, Idris Elba, and Priyanka Chopra. The action comedy follows the President of the United States and the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, who are attacked en route to an international summit. Forced to rely on each other, they must survive with the help of MI6 agent Noel Bisset.

With such diverse offerings, last week’s OTT releases catered to a wide audience, underscoring the medium’s dominance in global entertainment.
