For the first time in nearly two decades, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) convened a technical “knowledge‑sharing” workshop exclusively for telecom reporters. More than 50 journalists attended the half‑day session on Thursday at the regulator’s Agargaon headquarters.

Opening the event, BTRC Chairman Md. Emdadul Bari pledged to make such briefings a regular feature. He urged reporters to pair accuracy with “global telecom‑diplomacy perspectives” when covering the fast‑evolving sector.

Focus on handset market and NEIR roll‑out

Four technical presentations followed, detailing:

  • the true size and composition of Bangladesh’s mobile‑handset market, and

  • the engineering architecture of the forthcoming National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR), the database set to curb illegal handset imports through mandatory device registration.

Speakers included Commissioner (Spectrum) Mahmud Hossain, Director‑General Brig. Gen. Aminul Haque, Deputy Directors Kazi Md. Ahsanul Habib Mithun and Md. Mehfuz Bin Khaled.

Deputy Director Zakir Hossain Khan moderated the workshop.

BTRC last held a structured media‑orientation programme on telecom regulation in 2007.
