Murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Russell Vandalized at CUET

A group of students vandalized the murals of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman and Sheikh Russell at Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET) on Wednesday night. The incident occurred around 11:00 PM in the Swadhinata Chattar area after a procession organized by the CUET chapter of the anti-discrimination movement. The demonstration was reportedly held in response to a statement by Sheikh Hasina broadcasted on the verified Facebook page of the banned organization, the Bangladesh Chhatra League.
Mahfuzar Rahman, coordinator of the anti-discrimination movement at CUET, said, “The autocrat Sheikh Hasina has announced her intention to go live from India to destabilize the country. Even after killing two thousand people, she shows no remorse. Six months have passed, yet the Awami League’s politics have not been banned, nor have they been brought to justice.”
Mahi Islam, a student of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, told the media, “The fallen dictator Sheikh Hasina is attempting to incite chaos in the country through video messages even after fleeing abroad. In protest of her conspiracies and to erase all traces of dictatorship from CUET, we have demolished these murals.”
However, Moazzem Hossain, Deputy Director of the Student Welfare Department, declined to comment on the matter. He stated, “The students, in their anger, vandalized the murals at night. They acted out of frustration. We have no separate statement on this issue.”
Notably, at 9:00 PM on Wednesday, the Chhatra League announced that Sheikh Hasina’s statement would be broadcasted on its Facebook page. In response, the anti-discrimination movement called for a “Bulldozer March” and “March to Dhanmondi 32.” Expressing solidarity with this movement, protesters in various parts of the country also vandalized murals of Sheikh Hasina’s family members.
