Ending a five-year and two-month wait, Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) nanotechnology researcher and Chemical Engineering professor Dr. Md. Javed Hossain Khan has officially secured the patent for his innovative Nano Urea fertilizer. The Bangladesh Patent Office approved the patent on Sunday (October 25, 2026), marking a vital milestone in advancing modern and eco-friendly agricultural technologies in the country.

According to Dr. Javed, the initial patent application was filed in 2021. Following institutional perseverance and administrative support, the approval process reached its completion. Expressing his gratitude, Dr. Javed stated that the core objective of their research is to serve the nation's agriculture and farming communities. When applied effectively, Nano Urea enhances nitrogen-use efficiency, reduces fertilizer wastage, lowers production costs, and minimizes environmental strain caused by chemical overuse.

JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Yarul Kabir extended his congratulations, noting that this long-standing research breakthrough is a source of immense pride for the university and the nation. He emphasized that this cost-effective, eco-friendly alternative will significantly reduce farmers' expenses and save millions in foreign exchange by decreasing urea imports. Dr. Javed has been conducting advanced material research at the Nano-Bio and Advanced Materials Engineering (NAME) Laboratory at JUST since 2013 and was elected a Fellow of the Bangladesh Academy of Sciences in 2025.

Experts believe that this patent approval paves the way for technology transfer, commercial scaling, and widespread field application, successfully bridging indigenous laboratory research with practical agricultural deployment.
