Amit Ghosh, a student of South Point School and College, died Monday morning while undergoing treatment after sustaining serious injuries in a fall at the institution’s Malibagh campus.

He died at around 6:45am at a hospital in Shyamoli, according to two teachers who confirmed the death to the media at around 11:30am.

Amit was taken to Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) after the incident on Sunday, September 13, at around 10:30am. His family later transferred him to a hospital in Shyamoli, where he was treated in an intensive care unit.

The circumstances surrounding the fall remain unclear. Some teachers have described it as a suspected suicide attempt, while family members have rejected that interpretation and said the possibility of an accident should also be investigated.

Social-media profile raises questions

Following the incident, attention turned to information displayed on Amit’s Facebook and Instagram profiles. His profile bio reportedly included the dates ‘01/11/2007-13/09/2026’, along with the line ‘Stand proud. You're limited edition. Only one ever created.’

The presence of a date of death on the profile before the incident led some teachers and parents to suspect that the fall may have been intentional.

However, the information on a social-media profile alone cannot establish the cause or circumstances of a death. Investigators would need to examine the full context and other available evidence.

Parents question construction-site safety

A section of parents has raised questions about the building from which Amit fell. They said construction work was still ongoing and that the 11th floor was open.

Students were reportedly not permitted to enter the area. Parents therefore want authorities to determine how Amit gained access to the site and whether adequate measures were in place to prevent students from entering a hazardous construction area.

Witness accounts

Jago News spoke to at least three teachers and two parents who witnessed or had direct knowledge of the incident. According to their accounts, Amit fell from the upper section of Building 6 at the Malibagh campus at around 10:35am on Sunday.

Parent Shakila Akter Dipa, who said she witnessed the incident, wrote in a South Point School Facebook group that a second-year student had apparently jumped and that a suicide note was reportedly found in his bag.

She also described the incident as deeply distressing and expressed hope for the student’s recovery.

However, such accounts remain part of the preliminary information surrounding the incident and do not independently establish whether the fall was intentional.

Teacher mentions gaming, but cannot confirm cause

Discussion also emerged in school parent groups about Amit’s alleged gaming habits. Mathematics teacher Gopal Debnath wrote in a parent group that a Class XII student had become addicted to an anime-named mobile game and had attempted suicide by jumping from the building. He also wrote that a suicide note had reportedly been found in the student’s bag.

When contacted by Jago News, however, Debnath said he had not witnessed the incident himself.

‘I only heard that he fell from the 11th floor of Building 6. But I do not know whether he jumped or fell. I also heard that a suicide note was reportedly found in his bag. I heard all of this; I did not see anything myself. The gaming addiction issue was also something I heard,’ he said.

His clarification indicates that the gaming-related claim has not been independently established and should not be treated as a confirmed explanation for the incident.

DMCH confirms initial treatment

Habibur Rahman, inspector at the DMCH police camp, told to media that Amit was brought to the hospital in the morning. After receiving initial treatment, he was transferred by his family to a hospital in Shyamoli. DMCH issued his discharge papers following the family’s request, he said.

Attempts to contact Principal Md Shamsul Alam and Vice-Principal Jerina Ferdous for comment were unsuccessful as they did not answer calls. A mobile number associated with Amit’s family was also contacted, but no response was received.

The circumstances of Amit Ghosh’s death now warrant a proper investigation, including examination of the construction site, access controls, witness accounts, available digital evidence and other relevant information before any conclusion is drawn about whether the incident was accidental or intentional.
