Why You Should Restart Your Windows PC Regularly
There is a long-standing belief among computer users that a PC should be restarted or rebooted every day or at regular intervals. According to technology experts, restarting a computer at least once a week can be particularly beneficial for Windows-based PCs.
When a computer runs for extended periods, unnecessary data and cached files from various apps and background processes can accumulate in its memory or RAM. As a result, the PC’s performance may slow down and various technical complications can develop in its drivers.
A full restart completely clears the computer’s temporary or system memory. This not only improves the PC’s performance but can also help eliminate certain malware or security risks that may be temporarily residing in memory.
However, because of Windows’ “Fast Startup” feature, shutting down a PC normally does not completely clear its memory. The feature temporarily saves kernel files to enable faster startup. Therefore, to clear the memory and start a completely fresh session, users need to select Windows’ dedicated “Restart” option or shut down the PC while holding down the “Shift” key.
Restarting the PC is essential after updating various software, drivers or security patches for the operating system. This ensures that outdated information is cleared and the new updates are properly activated.
However, modern laptops and smartphones powered by ARM processors generally require less frequent restarts because they are designed to remain operational for extended periods. Nevertheless, for resolving common problems and maintaining performance on Windows PCs, there is still no substitute for regular reboots.
