Blank Pages, Hidden Perils

Global cybersecurity company Kaspersky has warned that even blank or incomplete webpages can pose significant cybersecurity risks to users. According to the company, many seemingly harmless parked domains can secretly collect users' personal information or redirect them to more dangerous websites without their knowledge.

In an advisory issued on Wednesday, July 29, Kaspersky said that a parked domain is a registered web address where a fully functional website has not yet been developed. Such domains typically display messages such as "Coming Soon," "Domain for Sale," or simply a blank page.

However, in many cases, hidden scripts embedded in these pages can collect users' IP addresses, location-related information, browser type, cookie identifiers, and unique browser characteristics, commonly known as browser fingerprints. The collected information may later be used by advertising networks to build detailed profiles of users' online activities without their consent.

Kaspersky further noted that such domains can also serve as gateways for larger cyberattacks. Cybercriminals may use these domains to redirect users to phishing websites, online scam pages, adult content, or websites distributing malicious software.

The company also highlighted the growing risk of typosquatting, a technique in which attackers create fake websites by altering one or two characters in the web address of a well-known site. Users who accidentally visit such websites may have their login credentials and financial information stolen, while their devices may also become infected with malware.

Commenting on the issue, a Kaspersky expert said, "Many people assume that a blank webpage is completely safe. But this is a misconception. Even a simple 'Domain for Sale' or blank page can collect various types of digital information from a user's device. Moreover, such domains can redirect users to phishing or malware-distributing websites, putting personal data, financial security, and even corporate accounts at risk."

To stay safe, Kaspersky advised users to avoid clicking on suspicious links, carefully verify website URLs, use reliable cybersecurity solutions that offer anti-tracking and anti-fingerprinting features, and immediately close any suspicious or blank webpage without clicking on banners or sharing personal information.
