UCB's AGM Focus: Emphasizing Technology and Good Governance
United Commercial Bank PLC (UCB) successfully concluded its 43rd Annual General Meeting (AGM), reiterating its commitment to ensuring good governance, expanding modern technology-driven banking services, and building a long-term sustainable capital structure. The meeting, held at Kurmitola Golf Club in Dhaka on Thursday, June 11, was presided over by Sharif Zahir, Chairman of the bank's Board of Directors. Senior bank officials and shareholders attended the AGM. Despite various economic adversities, the bank's remarkable business growth and modernization achievements in the past year were particularly lauded during the meeting.
Earlier in 2025, UCB set a new record in deposit growth, achieving 23% growth, which is more than double the national banking sector's average growth of 11%. The bank's total deposit now stands at BDT 68,394 crore. As part of efficient liquidity management, the loan-to-deposit ratio has been reduced from 91.3% to 83%, further strengthening the bank's financial foundation. Additionally, through stringent risk management and focused efforts, the classified loan rate has been lowered to 15.5%, and BDT 114 crore has been recovered from written-off loans.
To ensure maximum use of technology in banking services, UCB currently utilizes digital tools like the country's first microservice-based 'Open API Banking Platform' and the 'UCB One' app. As a result, approximately 65% of the bank's total transactions are now completed digitally. The bank has also achieved unprecedented success in Islamic banking and agent banking sectors. Policymakers view the achievement of reducing operating expenses by BDT 97 crore through disciplined cost management as a milestone for the bank's future progress. Shareholders expressed satisfaction with the bank's growth and fully supported the strategies adopted to address future challenges.
