Facebook, Messenger Hit by Global Outage
Popular social media platform Facebook and messaging service Messenger experienced a widespread service disruption on Friday evening, affecting users in Bangladesh as well as several countries around the world.
Beginning around 7:30 pm Bangladesh time, users reported difficulties accessing Facebook and Messenger on both desktop and mobile devices. Many encountered error messages such as “Sorry, Something Went Wrong,” while others were unable to log in, refresh their newsfeeds, load posts, or send and receive messages through Messenger.
According to outage-tracking platforms, thousands of complaints were submitted within a short period as users reported problems ranging from login failures to delayed message delivery and inaccessible pages. Reports also indicated that some users received messages such as “This page isn’t available right now” or experienced various query-related errors.
The disruption appeared to affect multiple Meta-owned services across several regions, with particularly high numbers of reports coming from countries including the United States and the Philippines. Users worldwide reported being unexpectedly logged out of their accounts and facing difficulties signing back in.
In Bangladesh, the issue quickly became a topic of discussion on alternative social platforms and online communities. Many users reported that while they could access their accounts, newsfeeds were not refreshing properly and Messenger messages were either delayed or failing to send altogether.
The exact cause of the outage remains unclear. As of the latest reports, there has been no confirmation on whether the disruption was caused by server failures, network configuration issues, or another technical problem.
However, Meta has acknowledged the incident. Company spokesperson Andy Stone stated that the company is aware that users are experiencing difficulties accessing its services and that engineering teams are working to resolve the issue.
Facebook and Messenger, owned by Meta, serve billions of users worldwide and play a critical role in communication, business operations, content distribution, and social networking. As a result, even a short-term disruption can cause significant inconvenience for individuals and organizations alike.
Technology analysts advise users not to panic during such outages. They recommend avoiding unnecessary password changes or clicking on suspicious account-recovery links, and instead waiting for official updates from the platform while services are being restored.
