US technology giant Microsoft has announced it will drop the “Microsoft Gaming” branding and return to its core name, Xbox. During a special meeting with employees last Thursday, Xbox Chief Asha Sharma unveiled a new logo and outlined the future roadmap for the company’s gaming division.

Branding and Logo Changes
Replacing the traditional black-and-white logo used since 2019, Xbox will now adopt a bright green “glossy” logo. Asha Sharma stated that while the “Microsoft Gaming” name reflected the company’s structural identity, its gaming ambitions are best represented by the name “Xbox.” Since assuming her role in February this year, she has pledged to restore Xbox’s former prominence.

Rethinking Game Exclusivity
Under former head Phil Spencer, Xbox began releasing its first-party titles on competing platforms such as PlayStation 5 and Nintendo. Notably, on 7 April, Bethesda’s popular title Starfield was launched on PlayStation. However, Asha Sharma has indicated a renewed focus on exclusivity, suggesting that top-tier titles may once again be reserved solely for Xbox.

Four Strategic Priorities
The new strategy places “daily active players” at its core, with four key priorities identified:

  1. Hardware: Maintain stability of current Xbox Series S/X consoles while accelerating development of the next-generation high-performance console, “Project Helix.”
  2. Content: Develop new franchises and expand gaming services in emerging markets, particularly in China.
  3. Experience: Enhance the console’s user interface, search capabilities, and social features to make them more user-friendly.
  4. Services: Make Xbox Game Pass more affordable and flexible. The company has already announced a reduction in Game Pass pricing.

Future Plans
Asha Sharma acknowledged that Xbox faces challenges in both PC and console markets. As part of efforts to make gaming more accessible and open, potential collaboration with messaging platform Discord has been discussed. Additionally, Xbox aims to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) to deliver more personalized gaming experiences.
