Video game developer Ubisoft has laid off around 40 employees from its Toronto studio, according to a report published Friday (February 20) by Canada-based outlet MobileSyrup. The news was also reported by Engadget.

The long-awaited remake of Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell Remake is currently under development at the Toronto studio. Despite the layoffs, Ubisoft has confirmed that work on the game will continue. However, the company did not disclose how many employees were originally assigned to the project or how many of them were affected by the cuts.

In a statement, Ubisoft said the decision was not taken lightly, describing the talent and dedication of the affected employees as exceptional. The company added that it is providing financial support packages and career placement assistance to those impacted. The Toronto studio is one of Ubisoft’s largest and previously developed major titles such as Watch Dogs: Legion and Far Cry 6.

The layoffs are part of Ubisoft’s broader restructuring efforts. Recently, staff reductions were also reported at its Sweden studio, and plans have emerged to cut around 200 positions at its Paris headquarters. Last week, the company announced the cancellation of an ambitious remake of Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake. In response to these developments, approximately 1,200 Ubisoft employees went on strike.

Since its initial announcement in 2021, development of the Splinter Cell remake has progressed slowly. Ubisoft has reiterated that, despite the latest workforce reductions, work on the project remains ongoing.
