DU Launches Modern Crime and Forensics Lab

In a move to modernise the study of criminology in Bangladesh by integrating theoretical learning with practical knowledge, the Department of Criminology at the University of Dhaka (DU) has launched its own Crime Investigation and Forensic Analysis Lab.

The laboratory was inaugurated on Wednesday at a ceremony held at the Professor Muzaffar Ahmed Chowdhury Auditorium under the Faculty of Social Sciences.

DU Vice-Chancellor Professor Niaz Ahmed Khan attended the event as the chief guest. Congratulating the department on this milestone achievement, he expressed optimism about the lab’s future success and its contribution to academic and applied criminology.

DU Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Professor Sayema Haque Bidisha said that although it is unfortunate, the scale and complexity of crime have increased over time. “This crime lab will play a vital role in scientifically identifying and analysing current crime trends,” she noted.

CID Chief Additional Inspector General of Police Md. Shibgatullah said that the nature of crime is changing rapidly. “This lab will help students better understand the modern dynamics and evolving patterns of criminal behaviour,” he added.

Among others present at the event were Professor Siddiqur Rahman Khan, Dean of the Faculty of Arts; Professor Tayebur Rahman, Dean of the Faculty of Social Sciences; and senior academics, law enforcement officials, and students. The event was presided over by Associate Professor Shaharia Afrin, Chairperson of the Department of Criminology.

A documentary highlighting the department’s 13-year journey was screened during the programme. Honorary crests were later presented to the guests. Criminology students Rafsan and Asif presented a research paper outlining the necessity and academic value of the new laboratory.

Following the discussion session, guests formally inaugurated the Crime Investigation and Forensic Analysis Lab by cutting a ribbon and celebrated the occasion by cutting a cake. The event was broadcast live from the department’s official Facebook page.
