As part of a major restructuring of its metaverse and virtual reality projects, social media giant Meta is planning layoffs in its Reality Labs division. According to The New York Times, up to 10 percent of the approximately 15,000 employees in Reality Labs could be affected.

Reuters reports that the announcement could come soon, with the greatest impact on staff working in the metaverse unit, responsible for virtual reality headsets and social VR networks.

Launched as an ambitious initiative by Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg, the metaverse project has incurred over $60 billion in losses since 2020. Reality Labs develops products such as the Meta Quest mixed-reality headset, Ray-Ban smart glasses, and augmented reality eyewear. While the metaverse concept has struggled to gain popularity, Meta has seen relative success in the smart glasses market.

Meanwhile, Meta faces mounting pressure in the AI competition. The underwhelming performance of the LLaMA 4 model has raised questions about the company’s strategy.
