OpenAI Opens Senior Role to Counter AI-Driven Cyber Risks
OpenAI has announced plans to recruit a new top-tier executive to address emerging cyber risks stemming from advanced artificial intelligence, introducing a key position titled Head of Preparedness. The role will focus on identifying and mitigating what the company describes as “critical vulnerabilities” arising from the use of frontier-level AI systems. The development was reported by PCMag.
OpenAI Chief Executive Officer Sam Altman said in a social media post that AI models have become increasingly capable in the domain of computer security, to the extent that they can now independently identify serious system weaknesses. This growing capability, he warned, has significantly heightened the risk of cyberattacks.
According to Altman, the individual appointed to the role will be responsible for strengthening the capacity of cybersecurity defenders while simultaneously ensuring that malicious actors are unable to misuse AI systems for offensive purposes.
The job description further notes that biosecurity-related risks will be a major area of concern. Experts have cautioned that highly advanced AI systems could, in the future, be misused for designing biological weapons or similar threats. The new appointee will therefore be tasked with overseeing OpenAI’s evolving Preparedness Framework, ensuring it keeps pace with rapidly changing AI-related risks.
OpenAI has indicated that the position will come with an annual compensation package exceeding USD 500,000, including salary and benefits, reflecting the high-pressure and high-stakes nature of the role.
