ChatGPT Growth Slows as Gemini Gains Momentum

OpenAI’s ChatGPT is experiencing a slowdown in user growth, according to market analytics firm Sensor Tower. Although ChatGPT still commands 50% of global mobile downloads and 55% of monthly active users, Google’s Gemini is rapidly gaining ground across all key metrics—including downloads, monthly user growth, and time spent in-app—reports TechCrunch.

Sensor Tower’s report shows that ChatGPT’s global monthly active users grew 180% year-on-year up to November 2025, while Gemini recorded a 170% increase in the same period. However, between August and November, ChatGPT’s month-to-month growth was only 6%, bringing its user count to approximately 810 million. Analysts say this slowdown indicates the market may be approaching saturation.

In contrast, Gemini’s monthly active users grew 30% during the same period, boosted significantly by the release of its new image-generation model, “Nano Banana.” Gemini’s strong presence on Android devices in the United States has also given Google an additional advantage.

Rising competition is another factor behind ChatGPT’s declining market share. In 2025, Perplexity’s user base grew 370%, while Claude’s increased by 190%. As a result, ChatGPT’s global market share dropped by three percentage points over the past four months.

ChatGPT also lagged in download growth. In November, downloads increased 85% year-on-year, compared to the overall market growth of 110%. Perplexity saw 215% growth, while Gemini recorded 190%.

User engagement time showed a similar trend. By November, Gemini users spent an average of 11 minutes per day in the app—an increase of 120% since March. In comparison, ChatGPT’s user engagement grew only 6%, and even saw a 10% decline between July and November.

Analysts believe Gemini’s recent surge stems largely from the popularity of “Nano Banana.” However, they note that ChatGPT’s growth could rebound if OpenAI launches new products or introduces powerful new features.
