TikTok Under Trial Over Teen Tragedy
France has launched a formal investigation into the algorithm of TikTok over concerns that the platform may be pushing vulnerable young users toward self-harm and suicide. The move follows growing global scrutiny of the app’s influence on teenage mental health, according to Reuters.
Laur Béccu, a public prosecutor in France, confirmed that the criminal investigation began at the request of the national parliament. A parliamentary report previously raised alarms that TikTok’s “weak moderation systems, easy access for minors, and complex algorithmic recommendations” could potentially drive psychologically vulnerable young users toward suicidal behavior.
The issue gained urgency in 2024 when seven families filed lawsuits against TikTok, alleging that content encountered on the platform had pushed their children toward self-harm and suicide. Similar lawsuits are ongoing in the United States, where lawmakers have also questioned the platform’s safety protocols and algorithmic design.
TikTok has strongly denied the allegations, stating that it has implemented “more than 50 safety features designed to protect younger users” and that “90 percent of inappropriate videos are removed before they are ever viewed.”
However, French law carries serious consequences for platforms found to be promoting or enabling suicide-related content. Courts have noted that “promoting suicide or facilitating access to such content” can result in up to three years of imprisonment.
The investigation will also examine TikTok’s data collection practices, its impact on freedom of expression, and concerns about its potential influence on political processes and elections—areas that have drawn increasing attention from European regulators.
