Amazon Axes 14,000 Amid AI-Driven Adjustment

In a major structural shift driven by the growing use of artificial intelligence (AI), Amazon has announced plans to cut around 14,000 corporate jobs globally. The company also indicated that further layoffs may follow next year, according to a report by Reuters.

The move reportedly aims to curb costs after over-hiring during the pandemic period. The layoffs are expected to affect several divisions, particularly Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Prime Video.

Amazon CEO Andy Jassy had earlier warned that the introduction of AI-powered automation would render many corporate positions redundant. The company currently employs about 1.56 million people worldwide, of whom approximately 350,000 hold corporate roles.

In an email to affected employees, the company stated, “Unfortunately, your position has been eliminated.” Employees will have a 90-day period to find alternative roles within the organization. Amazon added that its recruitment team would give priority support to those impacted by the layoffs.
