CUET Catalyzes Global Collaboration in Physics and Sustainability
A two-day international conference has begun at the central auditorium of Chittagong University of Engineering and Technology (CUET), organized by the Department of Physics. Academics, researchers, and scientists from various countries are gathering to discuss the use of technology for sustainable development, associated risks, and future directions.
Alongside Bangladesh, participants include leading academicians, scholars, and researchers from the United States, China, Japan, Malaysia, Pakistan, and India, representing renowned universities and scientific research organizations.
Supported by the University Grants Commission of Bangladesh, the conference features three keynote speakers and fifteen invited speakers over two days. Out of 400 submitted papers, 274 have been selected—165 for oral presentation and 109 for poster presentation.
In his inaugural address, CUET Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Mahmud Abdul Matin Bhuiyan said, “The world is facing critical challenges such as climate change, loss of biodiversity, disease outbreaks, greenhouse gases, resource scarcity, and growing inequality. It is crucial that researchers from developing nations take the lead in contributing meaningfully to solutions for humanity’s greatest challenges.”
He further added, “The fundamental knowledge required for future technological advancements, renewable energy, eco-friendly fuels, advanced materials, and technological innovations can only be attained through physics. No complex engineering problem can be solved without a solid understanding of physics. If you aspire to excellence in engineering, the study of physics is indispensable. The future of science and technology depends directly or indirectly on the contributions of physicists who continue to make an impact across the globe.”
The Guest of Honour at the inauguration was Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqeeb, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Rajshahi. Special guests included Dr. Faruq-uz-Zaman Chowdhury, former Vice-Chancellor of Hamdard University Bangladesh and former Professor of Physics, and Professor Dr. A. H. Rashedul Hossain, Dean of the Faculty of Science and Technology at CUET.
The event was presided over by Conference Chair and Head of the Department of Physics, Professor Dr. H. M. A. R. Maruf. The welcome address was delivered by Conference Secretary and Professor of Physics, Dr. Animesh Kumar Chakraborty. The program began with a recitation from the Holy Qur’an by Maulana Hafiz Qari Maulana Nurullah, Senior Pesh Imam of CUET Central Mosque. It was conducted by Tanzina Akhter, a PhD student, and Himel Barua, a Master’s student from the Department of Physics.
In his remarks, Professor Dr. Saleh Hasan Naqeeb said, “This conference at CUET provides us with valuable insights into research and global progress in the field of physics. I am hopeful that it will offer essential guidelines for tackling global challenges and fostering sustainable development.”
