Messenger Conversation Controversy: Calls for Accountability Amid Allegations in Naogaon Govt College
On 14 September, students and activists staged a human chain at the gate of Naogaon Government College, protesting against alleged irregularities, corruption, and “inappropriate conversations” between the principal and female students on Facebook Messenger. The demonstration began at 11:30 am inside the college premises and continued for an hour under the banner of students and the July Freedom Fighters’ Council, alongside injured and martyred families.
Participants demanded punitive action against the accused principal, Professor Shamsul Haque, following verification of the allegations. Reports surfaced that he had sent objectionable messages to female students via Facebook Messenger and pressured them into illicit relationships. Screenshots of the exchanges, which later circulated on social media, showed requests for photographs of female students “without scarves” and other inappropriate remarks. The revelations triggered outrage among students.
Speakers at the protest included Mizanur Rahman, President of the Naogaon District Socialist Student Front; Arman Hossain, representative of the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement; student Sadanan Sakib; Kazi Lulun Makhmim (Shilpi), mother of Shaheed Fahmin; Junaid Hossain Jun, convener of the College Branch of the Student Front; and guardian Golam Rasul, among others. General students of the college were also present.
Speakers alleged that Professor Shamsul Haque not only engaged in inappropriate online conversations with female students but also issued subtle threats when the issue was exposed. They further accused the college administration of physically assaulting students who protested. Complaints were also raised about charging excessive admission fees under false pretenses.
Student representative Arman Hossain remarked, “How can a principal make indecent remarks to female students? How can he demand pictures without scarves? How will students feel safe under such a principal? The college has no residential hall or canteen. Despite repeated demands, he has taken no initiative. Students rarely attend classes, but he seems unconcerned, only looking for ways to embezzle money.”
Mizanur Rahman, President of the District Socialist Student Front, added, “Extra fees are collected from students in the name of development, yet no visible progress has been made. The principal has nurtured a gang inside the college. Students are often subjected to attacks and beatings. For days on end, they are too afraid to protest.”
When contacted for comment, Principal Professor Shamsul Haque did not answer his phone.
