Chinese Chips Chase: Nvidia AI Orders Persist

Chinese technology giants such as Alibaba, ByteDance, and Tencent remain interested in purchasing Nvidia’s artificial intelligence chips, despite Beijing’s discouragement, according to four sources familiar with the matter, Reuters reports. The companies are reportedly seeking assurance on the order processing for Nvidia’s H20 model while awaiting the release of the more powerful B30A chip.
“If the B30A chip receives Washington’s approval, its price could reach up to $20,000—twice that of the H20. Yet, Chinese companies consider it a worthwhile deal, as it could be six times more powerful than the H20,” one source noted. Both chips are specially designed, lower-capacity versions that comply with export control regulations.
Nvidia generated 13% of its revenue from China in the last fiscal year, making market access in the country a significant issue in the U.S.-China technology competition. While China is pushing for greater reliance on domestic chips, companies have not been directly prohibited from purchasing Nvidia products.
