Engineers’ Eruption over Entitlement
BSc engineers continue their movement pressing a three-point demand, including a ban on the use of the title “engineer” before the names of diploma engineers. As part of their program, a complete shutdown is ongoing at BUET, RUET, CUET, and KUET.
To intensify the campus-based movement, the Engineers’ Rights Movement has announced a divisional grand rally in Chattogram on September 4. Leaders of the movement stated that their protest has been ongoing for a long time and will continue until the demands are met. The rally will take place in the afternoon at the historic Laldighi Ground.
Earlier, on September 1, a divisional rally was held at Shaheed Abu Sayeed Chattar in Rangpur under the banner of the BSc Engineering Graduates (BAUST). A delegation of protestors met with Rangpur Metropolitan Police Commissioner Md. Majid Ali, drawing his attention to cyber bullying incidents faced by the movement.
Meanwhile, as part of the protest on September 2, BSc engineering students boycotted classes and examinations across engineering and technology universities in the country, while displaying red cards against the diploma quota system. Representatives from SUST, Sylhet Agricultural University, and Sylhet Engineering College also held a midnight red-card demonstration against diploma quotas and syndicates.
On August 27, during their previously announced “Long March to Dhaka,” clashes broke out between protestors and police when demonstrators marched from Shahbagh towards the Chief Adviser’s residence at Jamuna. Following the incident, students shifted their focus from street demonstrations to campus-based programs.
The movement has continued for an extended period, with red-card displays symbolizing their opposition to diploma quotas. Protestors have demanded that “merit and qualification must be prioritized” and that “no quota system should exist” in the engineering sector.
