Fish Week Festivities at JUST
Jashore University of Science and Technology (JUST) celebrated National Fish Week 2025 with a colorful rally, fry release into the research pond, and a brief discussion session. This year’s theme is “Let’s build sanctuaries, fill the nation with native fish.”
On Tuesday, August 19, JUST Vice-Chancellor Professor Dr. Md. Abdul Majid inaugurated a series of programs organized by the Department of Fisheries and Marine Bioscience (FMB) to mark the occasion.
The celebrations began with a vibrant rally in front of the university’s National Poet Kazi Nazrul Islam Academic Building. The rally proceeded along the campus’s main road and concluded near the research pond, where fingerlings of various species were released. Students carrying colorful banners, festoons, and placards enthusiastically joined the procession.
Following the rally and fry release, a short discussion was held where the Vice-Chancellor addressed the students. He said, “We are known as a nation of ‘Machhe-Bhate Bangali’ (Fish and rice make a Bengali). I wish this slogan to live long, and that expectation rests on you. With your guidance and advice, fish farmers will be able to increase production. At present, the production of native fish is declining. You can take various initiatives to address this issue. By running campaigns in different areas with fish farmers, you can raise awareness among them. This will help meet the national protein demand and also enable us to export different species of fish abroad, earning economic benefits. We are already establishing a Coastal and Brackishwater Center in Satkhira with the aim of conducting research on marine fish and aquatic animals. I believe our students will contribute further to fisheries research by using this center.”
The program was presided over by Professor Dr. Md. Aminur Rahman, Chairman of the Department of Fisheries and Marine Bioscience. Professor Dr. Md. Sirajul Islam, Dean of the Faculty of Biological Science and Technology, also addressed the gathering. Faculty members including Professor Dr. Md. Anichur Rahman, Professor Dr. Manjurul Haque, Professor Dr. Mir Mosharrof Hossain, Assistant Professor Anushree Biswas, and Lecturer Sharmin Nahar, along with students from different years of the department, were present.
