OpenAI Offers Older Option After Outcry

Following widespread criticism over the launch of its much-discussed GPT-5 model, OpenAI has reinstated the GPT-4o model. A segment of users voiced frustration on social media, saying they preferred GPT-4o’s conversational style over the new release, with some even describing it as a “friend and confidant,” according to Engadget.

Initially, OpenAI made GPT-5 the default and removed the option to select older models. GPT-5 employs real-time router technology that switches between models adept at handling simple questions and those capable of deep analysis for complex queries. However, during its initial rollout, several issues emerged, which CEO Sam Altman said made the model feel “a bit dumb.”

In response to user backlash, the company restored the option for Plus subscribers to choose GPT-4 too.

Altman noted that the decision on how long to keep the older model available will depend on usage patterns, but added that efforts are underway to make GPT-5 “warmer.”
