In the recently concluded 2024–25 fiscal year, over Tk 9,000 crore in government assistance—spanning education stipends, social safety net allowances, and other support—was disbursed through the postal department’s mobile financial service, Nagad. More than 21 million beneficiaries across the country received aid via this platform, according to a press release issued by Nagad on Wednesday, July 23.
In the education sector alone, approximately Tk 3,000 crore in stipends were distributed to around 15 million students through Nagad. This included 9 million students at the primary level and 5.4 million at the secondary and post-secondary levels. Depending on their educational stage, students received between Tk 75 and Tk 200 per month in financial support. These stipends and allowances were disbursed quarterly or biannually to the registered Nagad wallets of the recipients.
Additionally, under special allocations by the Ministry of Education, 13,312 students studying in the madrasa and technical education boards—from Ebtedayee to Fazil and from vocational to diploma programs—received special grants through Nagad.
While the government utilizes several institutions to distribute social safety net allowances, Nagad has played a prominent role since the beginning. In FY 2024–25 alone, the platform disbursed Tk 6,000 crore in allowances to more than 7.5 million beneficiaries. These included senior citizens, widows, marginalized communities, persons with disabilities, the Bede community, and members of the third gender. Disbursements were made in four installments throughout the year under the Department of Social Services’ Social Safety Net Program.
Under this scheme, economically disadvantaged persons with disabilities received Tk 850 per month, while elderly individuals received Tk 600, and widowed or abandoned women were given Tk 550 monthly. A significant portion of maternity benefits provided by the Department of Women Affairs was also distributed through Nagad.
Commenting on the successful and transparent disbursement of government allowances, Bangladesh Bank-appointed Administrator of Nagad, Md. Motasim Billah, said, “This year, Nagad has successfully ensured transparency and accountability in distributing social safety net allowances and education stipends. Through effective coordination with various government agencies and ministries, we have achieved this milestone. Since Nagad has proven its capability to manage the entire disbursement process with transparency, we hope the government will continue utilizing Nagad for financial aid distribution.”
Importantly, Nagad ensures that all disbursed government funds include the applicable cash-out charge, meaning recipients do not incur additional withdrawal costs when accessing their funds.
