Fatboy Panel Malware Poses Fresh Threat to Smartphone Users

A new malware called ‘Fatboy Panel’ has reportedly infected nearly 25 million smartphones, prompting cybersecurity company Zimperium to issue a warning specifically targeting WhatsApp users.
In light of this development, cybersecurity experts have urged users to refrain from downloading applications or APK files from unknown links. They have also emphasized the importance of keeping Google Play Protect enabled at all times.
Experts further advised users to restrict unnecessary permissions granted to mobile applications. They stressed the need to carefully review which installed apps are accessing SMS, call logs, or gallery data. “Even basic awareness can protect users from major cybersecurity risks,” the experts said.
According to Zimperium, “Scammers are impersonating government officials or bank representatives and sending users a fake link. When clicked, an APK file is downloaded, allowing the malware to infiltrate the device.” The Indian Express reported that the malware not only takes control of the device but also collects one-time passwords (OTPs) and carries out financial transactions without the user’s knowledge.
“Immediately after installation, the malware hides its icon and disables Google Play Protect, making it difficult for users to detect the intrusion,” the report noted.
Zimperium’s chief scientist, Nico Kearavoglou, said, “Many users are still unaware of the risks involved in downloading apps from outside the Play Store. They are exposing themselves to significant cyber threats by installing APKs from fraudulent links.”
