Bangladesh Boosts Space Aspirations with Artemis Accords Signing
The Government of Bangladesh has recently signed the Artemis Accords, a pivotal international framework for space exploration and cooperation. This landmark step has garnered recognition from NASA, signaling a new era of opportunity and validation for the nation’s emerging innovators and its tech community.
In a press release issued on Saturday, April 19, the Bangladesh Association of Software and Information Services (BASIS) shared the congratulatory message sent by NASA. Representing NASA Acting Administrator Janet Petro, Allison James of the NASA Space Apps Challenge Global Community Management Team praised Bangladesh’s commitment to space science in a special email.
“The passion and enthusiasm shown by young minds in Bangladesh in their pursuit of space exploration has amazed the world,” she wrote. “In the past six years, innovators from Bangladesh have been crowned global champions four times in the NASA Space Apps Challenge. I am confident that outstanding scientists, engineers, and even astronauts will emerge from here.”
BASIS has described this acknowledgment as a significant international recognition of Bangladesh’s growing contributions to space and science. Since 2014, BASIS has been organizing the NASA Space Apps Challenge in Bangladesh for eleven consecutive years. More than just organizers, BASIS has consistently financed, resourced, and managed venues across the country while also supporting the winning teams’ international travels and participation.
This sustained commitment has led to four global championship titles for Bangladeshi teams over the last decade, with a remarkable three-year consecutive winning streak. In 2018, Shahjalal University of Science and Technology’s "Team Olik" won the “Best Use of Data” category for their virtual reality moon travel project. In 2021, "Team Mohakash" from Khulna University of Engineering & Technology (KUET) and Bangladesh Army University of Engineering & Technology (BAUET) claimed the “Best Mission Concept” award. In 2022, "Team Diamonds" won in the “Most Inspirational” category, followed by "Team Voyagers" in 2023, which secured victory in the “Best Storytelling” category.
Commenting on these accomplishments, BASIS Advisory Committee Chairman Rafel Kabir said, “It fills us with pride when we see someone from Bangladesh raise our flag at NASA. This competition is opening a door for free and independent thinking in science and technology. I believe such initiatives will ignite the dream of becoming scientists within our youth.”
BASIS believes that Bangladesh’s participation in space research and technology will inspire the next generation to be more innovative on a global scale. The recognition and goodwill from NASA will undoubtedly serve as a source of inspiration for young innovators across the country.
